Designing, building and testing specialized housing for underwater systems

A group of SEATAC and Marecomms staff pose for a photo with the research vessel on COVE's floating docks.

Summary

We’re collaborating with Marecomms Inc. to enhance the durability of their new underwater acoustic communications and networking solution. By designing and building a customized set of modular casings for the system, we’re helping them ensure their prototype is more robust for testing and demonstrations at sea.

Challenge

The client’s new networking solution is comprised of multiple low-power modems, which required in field testing. To enable smoother demonstrations and to support further product development, a new encasing strategy was needed to offer durability and resilience against on-water conditions and adaptability for continuous improvement. With the housing re-designed, the system also needed to be tested in a real-world marine environment.

Outcome

Marecomms’ system is better suited to testing onboard boats with a set of casings designed and built by our team. Its modular design allows easy internal access for further electronics development. The collaboration has continued with at-sea testing support, using both the research vessel and a smaller zodiac to evaluate performance across distances and guide ongoing system optimizations.
