Designing a cost-effective testing solution for sustainable marine coatings

A panel of multiple swatches of GIT coatings products attached to an apparatus for in-water testing.

Summary

We’ve partnered with GIT Coatings to design an innovative, cost-effective solution for testing their sustainable graphene-based marine coatings. Our team designed a rotating water wheel for dockside deployment, simulating the surface speed of a ship’s hull so the coatings can be effectively tested, with a brush device to test abrasion and cleaning resistance.

Challenge

GIT Coatings needed a reliable and economical way to test their products under conditions that mimic the wear and tear of a ship’s hull in marine environments. Traditional testing methods were too costly or impractical, calling for a creative and tailored solution.

Outcome

Once built, SEATAC’s water wheel design will simulate the harsh environments GIT’s vessel coatings must endure at sea while allowing for ongoing refinement and evaluation. Plans are in place for the collaboration to continue with support for building and testing the device in the Halifax Harbour.
